cognitive behavioural therapy

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy with a practical approach. CBT focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings and behaviour, and it teaches you coping skills for dealing with different issues you might be facing.

How does CBT work?
CBT combines cognitive therapy (examining the things you think) with behavioural therapy (examining the things you do). CBT is based on the idea that the way we think about situations can affect the way we feel and behave. For example, if you interpret a situation negatively then you might experience negative emotions, and those negative emotions might then lead you to behave in a way that is unhelpful to you.

What kind of issues can CBT help?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can be helpful for a wide range of difficulties including:

What happens at a CBT session?
In a CBT session you will work with an accredited therapist to identify and challenge any negative thinking patterns and behaviour which may be causing you problems. This approach can change the way you feel about situations, and enable you to change your behaviour in future.

You and your therapist might focus on what is going on in your life right now, but you might also look at your past, and think about how your past experiences impact the way you see the world.

You will work collaboratively with the therapist at each appointment and homework tasks will be set in-between sessions.

How many CBT sessions will I need?
Each session is between 50-60 minutes long and a full course of CBT can take between 6-20 sessions, depending on the issues you are working on and how quickly you progress with each session.
