Why see a Private GP ?

Private General Practice Services complements the service provided by the NHS and can be used as well as or instead of the services provided by your NHS Practitioner.

If you are visiting Cheshire either on business or for pleasure, and do not wish to have to register with an NHS GP in order to access healthcare you may want to see Dr Teri Johnson at Cheshire Lasers Clinic.

Most patients are aware that time with a GP within the NHS is a precious thing. Patients may have to wait a few days to a few weeks to be seen. The appointments are often at inconvenient times and do not fit in with your other commitments. Appointments are 10 minutes long and sometimes that is not enough time to fully explore the problems.

Dr Teri Johnson provides a private GP service at Cheshire Lasers Clinic, where you can specify how long you would like your appointment to be. A 15-minute appointment should be sufficient for most minor medical problems. A 30-minute consultation would be appropriate if you wish to discuss something in greater depth. You could book for even longer if you wished.

Will seeing a private GP affect my relationship with my NHS GP?

No. You may choose to see Dr Johnson for all your routine doctor requirements or just occasionally when it is appropriate to do so. We like to let your NHS GP know that you have seen us, but this would be your choice.

We advise that you remain on the list with an NHS GP to ensure assistance at all times ideally at a practice close to your home.

What about patient confidentiality?

The first time that we see you, we will ask you for some personal details in order to open a confidential medical file, which will then contain all your records. These are subject to the same strict rules of confidentiality that you would expect of any medical records. No information will be passed on without your consent.

What are the appointment times?

Dr Johnson will attempt to provide your private GP appointment as soon as possible, at a time to suit you. Appointments are usually available with her on Tuesday afternoon and evening, Wednesday afternoon,Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon.

Please note she does not offer emergency treatments. These would be best accessed via your NHS GP or GP ‘Out-of-hours’ service or via your local Accident and Emergency Department.

Would a consultation benefit me?

Dr Teri Johnson has been a family GP in Cheshire since 1999. She specialises in Gynaecology, Family Planning and sexual and reproductive health. She is a part time GP at The Oaklands Medical Centre, Middlewich where she provides NHS care.

Due to UK rules she is unable to provide private GP services to anyone registered at The Oaklands Medical Centre. Cheshire Lasers does not have the facilities of a standard General Practice surgery and at present we are unable to provide services onsite such as blood tests, ECGs, coil fitting, Implant fitting or sexual health screening. Dr Johnson can however help you access these services on the NHS and privately.

If you have a more complex specialist problem it is worth checking with the clinic that Dr Johnson can help you before booking an appointment. You can always ask for her to phone you to clarify first.

Can I be referred on?

Dr Johnson can refer you to see a consultant privately, as appropriate. She has worked as an NHS GP for 11 years in Cheshire and is aware of the local consultants in all specialties. She can refer you to be seen as an outpatient or for radiological investigations such as a scan.

Before being referred it would be worth checking that you are insured to meet the cost or that you having alternative arrangements in place to meet the costs.

Please note for NHS outpatient appointments or scans, you would need to consult with your NHS GP.

Can I be referred to NHS consultants?

No, as a private practice, the law only allows us to refer to NHS Accident and Emergency, Genitourinary (GUM) and family planning doctors. Further details are given above.

If you required referral and you wished to be seen by an NHS consultant, we could write to your own GP in order that they could organise this.

Can I obtain a prescription?

We are able to offer prescriptions. The prescription will be a private prescription rather than an NHS prescription, which means that you pay for the cost of the drugs and a chemist’s dispensing fee. For most commonly prescribed drugs, the charge is unlikely to be much different to a standard NHS charge although this may be cheaper.

What if I need a blood test?

We do not provide a blood sampling service. Blood tests can be requested privately by Dr Johnson but you would need to attend a local hospital who will charge you for the service directly. Alternatively after a recommendation by Dr Johnson, we can ask if your NHS GP is happy to arrange these tests.

What is the cost of this service?

All fees are payable immediately after the consultation by cash, cheque or credit card.

Insurance companies in the UK do not cover fees for visits to GPs. However tests and x-rays are usually covered.

Our prices are for face to face consultations as well as telephone conversations/consultations or indeed any other form of medical contact since the work is the same.

Please note that if you are a new patient with existing medical problems then the consultation time may need to be longer. You will be charged extra for additional services such as referral letters, repeat medication and reviewing results.

The price of a 15 minute appointment is £60.

Designed for a quick consultation with an experienced GP. Perfect for when you know what you want to chat about and have only a couple of questions. If you want to talk about an existing condition, need a prescription or medication or you want the advice of a professional quickly

For a 30 minute appointment the fee would be £100

Three times longer than a standard NHS GP appointment and at a time convenient to you. This appointment should allow you to cover the issues you require with time for a detailed, relaxed conversation. This will suit you if you have more than one problem or you have a more complex problem and you are unsure exactly what the best course of action is and you'd like to go through some options
