What is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)?

EMDR is a treatment for distressing memories; those memories may be related to trauma such as sexual abuse, childhood neglect, road traffic accidents or violence. It can also, be helpful for phobias, traumatic grief, pain and performance anxiety. Traumatic memories can become blocked in the brain which then causes symptoms of anxiety and intrusive images.

You may have tried to avoid the thoughts and certain places related to the trauma because of this. The brain stem is triggering the fight/flight response. The Amygdala in the brain becomes overcharged by the blocked memory as it remains unprocessed and undigested. It then affects the thinking process.

EMDR treatment uses bilateral stimulation activating the left and right brain hemispheres. It activates the memory networks allowing the memory to be processed and digested. The bilateral stimulation can be auditory, tactile, sensory and also visual stimulus. It may trigger off other memories that you may not have been aware of.
