Dark circles appear under the eyes for many reasons and may simply be a genetic condition. ‘Periorbital hyperchromia’ – is a technical name that refers to the area around the eye socket caused by excessive pigmentation and is one of the most common reasons for circles under the eyes seen in all ages.
Other people have the appearance of dark circles just due to their anatomy and the shape of the structures around the eyes. In certain lights, shadows are cast in any hollows and under any protruding eyelids or eyebags, which make the area look dark.
Other causes of Dark Circles include:
Dehydration of the skin cells makes dark circles more noticeable.
Simply drinking more water can bring about a marked reduction in the circles. Sometimes a topical B5 serum is needed to improve the skin’s hydration.
Stress / Lack of sleep: can make the skin appear more sunken or make eye bags look puffier, which can make dark circles more noticeable.
Drinking alcohol: The consumption of alcohol allows the small blood vessels in the skin to dilate or expand, so dark circles under the eyes may become more prominent. Dehydration also occurs, which adds to the problem.
Ageing: As people age, their skin becomes thinner due to a reduction of fat and collagen, making the blood vessels beneath it more noticeable, which thereby makes the area under the eyes appear darker. In addition, the ligaments under the eye weaken and in some people the fat loss causes the skin to sag and create a tear trough and sometimes a bag. These create a shadow on the skin, creating the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.
Pigmentation: The eyelids’ skin is often darker than that of the rest of the face. But in some people, this can be more pronounced. This can be genetic or caused by environmental factors. The most common cause is sun exposure. Pregnancy, hormones and trauma to the skin, such as excess rubbing of the eyes, can also increase pigmentation. A good SPF eye cream is recommended if you are at risk of high sun exposure.
Vascular congestion: This is an area containing many small blood vessels. In some people, these are congested, causing a somewhat purple discoloration. Patients who suffer from allergies could get venous congestion under the eye creating dark circles.
What can be done to improve dark circles?
To improve dark circles, you first need to understand the cause.
After this, the key is to work out if the causes are treatable or not. You can not change the shape of someone’s face however some simple causes can be improved.
Treatments to be considered include:
Concealer
The right coloured concealer applied in the right way can make a massive difference to dark circles. If you struggle to do this, it is worth booking in with a reputable makeup artist who can teach you how to do it more effectively.
Avoid Dehydration
Sometimes drinking more water or applying a B5 serum for hydration is all that is needed.
Treatments to reduce pigmentation:
Topical treatments can be applied to gently lighten the skin and an SPF can be applied to prevent further pigmentation for any sun exposure.
Collagen Stimulation using Radiofrequency technology can also be effective using the Endymed 3D Deep or ThermaClinic these treatments are relaxing and non invasive with no downtime but a course of 6 is required every 1- 2 weeks.
Ultraformer HIFU treatment is another device treament which uses Ultrasound Energy to stimulate collagen. It is a little bit more painful and more aggressive but is more effective. We recommend 3 treatments one every month.
Neogen is another excellent collagen stimulator. This device uses Nitrogen Plasma to stimulate collagen. This causes some mild discomfort and sometimes 3-5 days down time. A course of treaments is usually required for best results.
The CACI Eye Revive is a three step treatment that stimulates collagen using radiofrequency and also by infusing products in to the skin that hydrate stimulating new collagen. It can give a temporary improvement after one treatment but for best results a course of treatments is recomended. It is also a great way of boosting the eye area before a special event.
Juvelook is a biostimulatory injectable combining: Hyaluronic acid (HA) for hydration which can brighten and reduce the look of shadows right away and also Poly-D,L-lactic acid (PDLLA). PDLLA stimulates the body’s collagen production over weeks to thicken and strengthen the under-eye skin. Thicker skin is less transparent and shows less of the bluish vascular shadow that contributes to dark circles. This dual action supports skin improvement over time by adding hydration and encouraging collagen growth. It reduces the shadow effect and brightens the under-eye area.
Due to it being an injectable treatment, slight swelling or bruising can occur which could last several days. A course of three treaments are usualy required.
Juvelook tends to be most effective when the dark circles are due to:
Thin under-eye skin that reveals underlying vessels
Hollowing/tear troughs casting shadows
General aging/texture changes around the eyes
Treatments to improve Tear Troughs:
Tears develop due to soft tissue volume loss in the cheek and eye area. The ligaments of the lower eyelid weaken and the bony area under the eyelid becomes accentuated. This can also lead to the appearance of lower eyelid fat pockets (eye bags), and both of these changes can lead to a dark shadow or hollow beneath the eyes and can cause a tired appearance.
At Cheshire Lasers, we treat Tear Troughs with the following:
At Cheshire Lasers, we use hyaluronic acid Dermal Fillers to treat tear troughs. These fillers slowly break down over time, and in most patients, results can last a year. You may need a top-up procedure to achieve the best results.
Depending on your anatomy and your medical practitioner’s preference they may use Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero or Teosyal Redensity 2 a filler designed especially for the tear trough area.
PRP treatments for the under eye and the upper eyelid lead to stimulation of your own collagen and elastin and regeneration of new healthy skin tissue for gradual, natural and real results that improve in the 2-3 months following a single treatment.
We recommend two to three treatments, 2-3 months apart. PRP injection treatments below the skin in the under-eye area do not have immediate results. Unlike Dermal Fillers, which are instant, PRP is resorbed by your body within 2-3 days. There is then a gradual tissue regeneration which continues for months. You see the final results 3-4 months after each treatment. PRP treatments improve fine lines, texture, loose skin, loss of volume, deep wrinkles and some pigmentation.
Treatments to improve Eye Bags:
We can do very little at Cheshire Lasers to help with eye bags. In most cases, the best treatment is surgery.
Some of the treatments mentioned above can help, but the results are subtle and will not last long without regular treatments to maintain results.
The CACI Eye Revive is our favourite non-surgical treatment for eye bags. It can give a temporary subtle improvement and is worth trying. If it helps, it is an excellent way to boost the eye area before a special event.
What can I do at home to enhance my results?
The skin under the eye is the thinnest of the face. As we age, the blood vessels underneath become visible and create a darkened reflection. Investing in an Eye Cream: that includes Retinol, Peptides, Caffeine, and Antioxidants is key. Retinol works by exfoliating dead skin cell leading to collagen production. Peptides applied topically send “signals” to through the skin to prompt the formation of new collagen. Caffeine constricts blood vessels which reduces puffiness and redness. Antioxidants (ex: Vitamin C or Green tea) offer powerful protection from the sun and also brighten the skin.
HArmonyCa is a dual-effect Hybrid Injectable. It contains two active ingredients, calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) and hyaluronic acid (HA). These two components are in well-known dermal fillers and have both been in use for over two decades.
It also contains lidocaine, an anaesthetic, to reduce the discomfort of treatment.
How do HA and CaHA work?
Hyaluronic acid has a volumising, lifting and hydration effect. The results are immediate and can last anything from 3 to 18 months.
Calcium hydroxyapatite has an excellent collagen stimulation effect which causes skin firming and tightening. Over time the particles stimulate the production of a collagen network in the skin, creating a tightening and lifting effect that can last 1-3 years.
Which areas can HArmonyCa treat?
HArmonyCa works best under the surface of the skin where collagen stimulation is needed. It cannot be injected around the eyes, lips or mouth.
What makes HArmonyCa different from other Biostimulators?
Biostimulators work differently, and the results and longevity vary from person to person. What makes HarmonyCA even more different is that it is the first one to combine a biostimulator with hyaluronic acid.
HArmonyCa Aftercare
You should avoid strenuous activity and exposure to sunlight and tanning lamps or extreme weather conditions for 24 hours post-treatment in order to reduce redness, swelling and irritation.

Who Performs HArmonyCa Treatments at Cheshire Lasers?
The Following specialists performs HArmonyCa treatments at Cheshire Lasers.
TCA is a powerful acid used in the more aggressive chemical peels for skin improvement and rejuvenation. It promotes rapid skin improvement and also dermal collagen remodelling. The acid damages the surface of the skin, which then causes healing and repair. Although it works wonderfully, it also comes with a much higher risk of side effects in comparison to milder peels.
pHformula uses a unique delivery complex PH-DVC™, which transports the TCA molecules into the deeper skin layers allowing the active ingredients to work deeper within the skin rather than damaging the surface. This complex significantly reduces skin injury. Therefore the skin is more tolerant, and there is rarely any downtime, unlike many other TCA peels.
pHformula TCA Touch contains:
30% TCA
Arbutin for its skin-lightening properties
Magnesium Sulfate for its anti-inflammatory effect
PH-DVC the delivery complex
This combination results in intense stimulation and cell renewal with excellent skin tolerance and effectiveness.
The PH-DVC complex allows for maximum efficacy without the negative side effects normally seen with conventional peelings, allowing controlled protons release. No severe superficial trauma, complications or side effects and excellent skin tolerance!
When to consider a TCA Touch Peel
TCA Touch has an instant lifting and cell renewal effect ideal for anti-ageing but can help improve skin with a range of problems.
The TCA Peel is usually a one to three-session treatment with around 4 to 6 weeks in between each session.
At your review, our doctor can assess your skin and decide with you if further treatments are appropriate.
What reactions may I have?
Normal Reactions include:
Mild irritation at the time of application.
Redness
Tightness
Flaking or mild shedding
Peeling
Temporary dryness
Aftercare
It is important that you:
Avoid direct sun exposure for a few weeks after treatment.
Use a high SPF
Our doctor will recommend prescription home care to prepare your skin for treatment and to use after the treatment. It is important that you use only these products for the next 2-3 weeks to achieve the best results and to help the healing process after the skin resurfacing treatment. Using other products can increase the risk of unwanted reactions.
The prescription strength products are all formulated with the unique PH-DVC™ complex to help you achieve the best possible results.
24 hours post-treatment, tightness and dryness may be seen; the use of the homecare alleviates this.
48-60 hours later, you may see flaking or mild shedding
What does the TCA Touch Treatment involve?
The treatment takes only 30 minutes.
It involves cleansing the skin and applying a primer to remove any surface oil and maximise penetration of the peel complex.
Two layers of the TCA Touch™ solution are massaged gently into the skin which is then soothed with pHformula post-procedure cream and protected with UV Protect SPF 50.

Dr Teri Johnson discusses the wide range of treatments for the lips and the area around the mouth at Cheshire Lasers. The treatments involve the use of Dermal Fillers, Botox, Polynucleotides as well as other rejuvenation treatments to achieve the following goals:
Lip Enhancement
Lip Rejuvenation/ Restoration
Lip Hydration
Lip Line Treatments
Lip Flip
Lip Enhancement
A lip enhancement treatment plumps the lips, replaces lost volume and improves lip hydration. Dermal Fillers are the best treatment for this.
The following specialists provide Lip enhancement with Derma Fillers at Cheshire Lasers:
There are many treatments available for Lip Rejuvenation at Cheshire Lasers. Dermal Fillers are also successful for this treatment; a soft subtle dermal filler around the lip area recreates a youthful appearance, adds back hydration, and can significantly reduce fine lines.
Lip Rejuvenation with Dermal Filler is available at Cheshire Lasers with the following specialists:
The following images are provided by Aesthetic Nurse Moira.
She uses Beletero Balance in her patients to soften the lip lines and rejuvenate the area about the mouth. Moira uses a special blanching technique to decrease the lines but not increase the volume of the area.
Botox Treatments
Botox can be used around the mouth to offer two types of results:
Smoker’s Line Reduction
Botulinum Toxin relaxes the muscles that purse the lips. By reducing the repeated contractions, the fine lines caused by the movement reduce for about 8 to 10 weeks.
This treatment takes knowledge and skill, as too much muscle relaxation can lead to weakness of the mouth muscles.
The Lip Flip
The Lip Flip is when botox injections around the mouth muscle at certain points relax the lip muscle and ‘flips’ the lip out to make it appear fuller, plumper and much more visible.
Cysteamine cream is a skin-lightening agent known for treating hyperpigmentation disorders such as age spots, melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Dermatologists have been recommending it for several years since it has been available in the UK.
Cyspera Cysteamine Cream was the first brand available in 2019, and it became popular due to published evidence supporting its effectiveness. A few years later, it was discontinued and replaced by Cyspera Intensive which has also been discontinued in the UK.
What is the difference between Dermaquest Cystamine Serum and Cream, Cyspera and Cysteamine HSA
The original Cyspera contained 5% Cysteamine cream and came in a 50g tube. Cyspera Intensive, contained 7% Cysteamine cream with added ingredients such as AHAs to enhance pigmentation reduction, Isobionic-Amide, which is an anti-inflammatory B3 derivative and other ingredients to mask the smell slightly because the ingredients could not be combined in the tube it comes in a 30ml dual pump. This product has been discontinued in the UK. These were both mask treatments which needed to be washed off after 15 minutes.
Senté Cysteamine HSA Pigment & Tone Corrector contains 5% Cysteamine Cream in a 50ml tube. It also contains B3 niacinamide and HSA, which in combination improve skin tone by treating pigmentation and reducing redness or inflammation. Senté Cysteamine HSA Pigment & Tone Corrector should be applied like a mask on the problem area and washed off after 15minutes.
DermaQuest MelaQuest Cysteamine Serum and DermaQuest MelaQuest Cream with Cysteamine also contain antioxidants- Glutathione and Ginko Biloba to reduce inflammation and skin sensitivity, a tyrosine inhibitor – Kojic Acid to help reduce pigmentation and Snow Algae, which improves the skin’s collagen and cellular defence.
DermaQuest MelaQuest Cysteamine Serum contains 4% Cysteamine, which is shown to be as effective as prescription 4% hydroquinone and DermaQuest MelaQuest Cream with Cysteamine contains 3% Cysteamine. Both of these products can be left on the skin, which makes your daily routine easier. They still have an aroma, but this is masked by some of the other ingredients. For best results, Dermaquest advises you to use the serum and then the cream twice daily.
Some people may try the serum first on its own and add on the cream if the would like to enhance the results.
Skin Sensitivity with the Different Cysteamine Creams
Cysteamine is known for causing irritation for some users, hence why the latest versions contain ingredients to counteract this.
Sante, however, uses their HSA compound to provide a soothing repair base to the Cysteamine cream, so it is more suitable for sensitive skin and red skin.
Dermaquest uses glutathione and Ginko Biloba to reduce inflammation and skin sensitivity,
How to use the different Cysteamine Creams
For all products: If you have never used it, begin with a patch test. Then, apply every other day to the treatment area and increase to everyday use as tolerated.
For Cyspera and Sente products:
Do not wash the skin before application.
If necessary to wash, you must wait for one hour before applying Cyspera and 20 minutes before applying Senté Cysteamine HSA Pigment & Tone Corrector
Apply a thin layer on the pigmented skin you wish to treat
Leave on for 15 minutes
Remove by washing the area with a gentle face cleanser.
Gently pat your face dry and apply a gentle moisturiser and SPF if in the day
Do not leave on for more than 15 minutes.
Intensive phase: Once per day for up to 16 weeks.
Maintenance phase: Twice-weekly, once per day, indefinitely.
Use a high SPF sunblock to prevent activating the pigmentation.
For best results, you need to make sure you are consistent and apply products daily.
How does it Cysteamine work?
As the name implies, the cream contains cysteamine, a metabolite of L-cysteine and a natural cellular component. L-cysteamine inhibits the production of melanin in the skin in several different ways, which is why it is so effective.
It works as an Antioxidant and also inhibits the Tyrosinase enzyme, reducing the production of melanin precursors, therefore decreasing pigment production.
There is a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial that confirmed the efficacy of cysteamine cream in the treatment of epidermal melasma.
A reduction in pigmentation is usually seen after six weeks of consistent use. It takes 8 to 16 weeks of regular use to achieve optimal results
Contraindications to use:
Cysteamine cream should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can I use Cysteamine in the summer?
You can use this treatment any time of year regardless of the intensity of sunlight; it is not a photosensitiser.
I have a dark skin tone can I still use it?
Yes it is suitable for all skin types and skin tones.
What are the side effects and risks?
Local side effects at the site of application may include:
Temporary heating up or burning sensation and redness
More persistent irritation and dryness, which you can treat with an emollient.
This reaction may happen during the first few days of application and are generally mild with the newer products.
In case of sustained redness, irritation or dry skin, suspend Cysteamine application and carefully hydrate the area with your basic hydration cream. You can try to resume gradual application once your skin has recovered.
If you have not used Cysteamine Cream before and want to purchase it. You are welcome to arrange a consultation to advise you on how to use the products and how to add them to your routine.
pHformula Radiance Release System is an in-clinic treatment perfect for boosting the skin and making it more radiant.
It is an excellent treatment to consider before and after sun exposure, as the L-ascorbic acid suppresses melanocyte activity and reduces the harmful effects of the sun’s rays.
It also helps to strengthen the skin’s collagen and elastin network and speed up the skin’s healing and repair rate.
The treatment suits skins with photo-ageing and pigmentation and is also an excellent preventative treatment.
What is in The pHformula Radiance Release System?
pHformula Radiance Release System contains a complex of pure L-ascorbic acid, Retinol, and Hyaluronic acid. It also includes the pHformula special delivery complex, which enhances the penetration of the ingredients to the deeper layers of the skin.
During treatment, we activate the complex with a pHformula radiance release activator before applying it to your skin. This ensures the treatment is at optimum potency to achieve the best results.
Which Treatments contain the Radiance Release System?
Radiance Boost Summer Facial
We combine a gentle resurfacer treatment ( SP Complex) with the pHformula Radiance Release System to suppress melanocyte activity, stimulate collagen and reduce the effects of the sun’s harmful rays. We then apply a mask tailored to your skin type, or you can take one home to use later in the day when you have more time.
We combine a gentle CR Complex Resurfacing System with the pHformula Radiance Release System.
This facial is excellent in the summer, before and after a sunny holiday, and before a skiing trip to reduce the harmful effects of winter sun. Please be aware that it is still essential to protect the skin from UV radiation using SPF 50+ and to avoid direct, extended sun exposure.
We then apply a mask to treat your skin type. Alternatively, you can take a mask home to use later in the day when you have more time.
You must collect a CR sample to do a test patch 4 or 5 days before the treatment.
To book a VITA C. Resurfacing Treatment, you can either book an appointment and arrange to collect the sample through reception or book a consultation for a skin assessment, and we can give you one then.
Radiance Boost add-on Treatment
You can also experience a Radiance Boost added to your usual CACI Facial, Endymed, Ultraformer, Microneedling, or Thermaclinic Facial. When booking, simply choose the add-on treatment you would like to try.
We recommend for the best results you prepare your skin with pHformula homecare products for two weeks before your first treatment. This will enhance your overall results and allows you to get used to the products in the stronger resurfacing serums.
Alternatively, you can book in for your first treatment when we will perform a Vitamin C Radiance treatment, a skin sensitivity test and a mask treatment. We will then start you on a skin resurfacing homecare kit that contains the fundamental products to optimise your results in further treatments and also maintain the best possible results during the treatment programme.
Whichever approach you prefer we still recommend a full consultation prior to treatment to make sure that you do not have any medical conditions that will affect the treatment. We can arrange this over the phone, by video or face to face.
You have a history of keloid scarring, scleroderma, collagen vascular disease or other cardiac abnormalities, and haemorrhagic disorders
Have an active fungal, viral or bacterial infection in the

Cyspera® is a biological depigmenting cream for treating melasma and hyperpigmentation concerns.
The active ingredient is cysteamine is naturally present in human skin cells. It regulates melanin synthesis in the skin and is a highly effective topical treatment for pigmentation. The new formulation of Cyspera Intensive contains 7% Cysteamine.
Hyperpigmentation and Melasma are common skin conditions in which some areas of the skin become darker than the surrounding skin. Pigmentation occurs when an excess of melanin is produced by melanocytes, the pigment cells, which are moved up to the skin’s surface. Hyperpigmentation can be caused by inflammation, hormonal stress, sun damage, or other skin injuries.
Cyspera® is a biological molecule that reduces melanin pigments in human skin. It helps remove brown spots, treats pigmented marks and produces an even and light skin complexion.
Significant depigmenting effectiveness.
